When it comes to snowboard bindings, there are two names that are currently making the rounds in the industry: the K2 Clicker vs Burton Step On 2023/2024.
These bindings are based on the Step-In concept, which is a strapless binding used with special boots that snap into the binding.
Both are designed to make the snowboarding experience easier, faster and more comfortable.
But which binding is better? In this review, we’ll take a closer look at K2 Clicker vs Burton Step On (More specifically the K2 Clicker X HB) and compare their advantages and disadvantages to help you decide which one is right for you.
K2 Clicker vs Burton Step On
K2 Clicker X HB
Burton Step On
#1 how do they work
The fastening system of the K2 Clicker X HB uses two metal hooks embedded in the sole of the boot that attaches to the base like the snap-on pedals of a race bike.
The burton step on bindings system uses three hooking points to secure the boot to the binding.
There are two cleats on the toe of the boot and one cleat on the heel.
How to hook up?
Enter the binding with the sole of your foot to engage the toe, then move your foot slightly backward. A further click will confirm the lock.
After that, rotate the lever located at the inside rear of the binding.
Step into the binding with your heel to secure the heel clip and then press your toe, first right then left, or vice versa, until you hear the front clicks.
How to release?
To release the boots, re-rotate the lever and then lift it.
To get out the bindings, pull the lever on the heel of the binding and rotate your foot.
#1 Results:
Both bindings:
To get into the bindings you have to stand!
The system is easy to use, intuitive.
However, to completely lock the boot you need to rotate a lever, which makes it less fast.
The system is very simple, you do not have to rotate a lever to hook up, so it is faster and more comfortable.
However you may have difficulty to unhook because the movement is tricky, especially at first.
#2 Responsiveness
K2 clicker bindings are very responsive, because the boot is hooked directly and internally with the binding.
This makes it easy to transfer our movements to the snowboard.
In addition, the feel is the same as a binding with straps, which makes them an excellent choice for those who want a classic binding, but more comfortable and quicker to hook up.
Burton step on bindings, on the other hand, are less responsive.
This is because the hook points do not allow the best movement transfer from our body to the snowboard.
In addition, the feeling is quite different from the classic bindings.
#3 Snowboard and binding compatibility
K2 clicker bindings are compatible with 4×4, 4×2 and channel mounting systems.
Burton step on bindings, thanks to the re:flex binding disc are universally compatible.
#3 Results:
K2 clickers are not compatible with the 3D mounting system.
However it is uncommon, so this is not a great disadvantage.
Burton step on bindings are universally compatible, making them a possible option for anyone who already has a snowboard.
#4 Flex
Flex: 5/10, 6/10
K2’s bindings have two flex levels, 6/10 for the 2023 model. While 5/10 for the 2024 models.
Both are great for all mountain and offer a lot of versatility.
I recommend you read our guide on snowboard binding flex to better understand how it works.
Flex: 6/10, 8/10
Burton Step On’s flex is 6/10 or 8/10, so medium or stiff.
Those with flex 6 are versatile and therefore perfect for all mountain, while those with flex 8 are more suitable for freeriding.
There are several Burton step on models with different flex values.
To find out which ones they are, go to the prices section of our review.
#4 Results:
K2 clicker X HB’s flex limits them more to all mountain. They are also good in freestyle for high jumps.
However, they are not suitable for freeriding, unlike the Burton Step On.
The limitation to freestyle for high jumps only could be a disadvantage for those practicing full freestyle.
Burton Step On offers great flex levels for all mountain, but also freeriding.
In contrast, they do not offer flex suitable for freestyle unlike K2’s.
#5 Highback Angle adjustment
The highback of the K2 Clicker X HB is easily adjustable using two spacers.
By rotating them you can adjust the forward lean of the highback from 0° to 6°.
All this without the need for tools.
I recommend you read our guide to figure out what highback angle you need to set.
The Burton Step On highback has an adjustable forward lean.
It can be changed by adjusting screws located inside the highback using a screwdriver.
Tighten the screws to decrease the forward lean, while unscrewing them to increase it.
Pay attention to the inclination markers (F1, F2, F3) to determine the correct setting.
#5 Results:
Adjustment is extremely quick and easy, and can be done without tools whenever you want, including between runs or simply stopping while riding.
Although simple, adjusting the highback requires a screwdriver, which results in less comfort and more wasted time.
However, they can lean the highback in multiple angles.
#6 Heelcup Adjustment
To adjust the heelcup size, unscrew the screws located on the left and right sides.
Once they are unscrewed, you will be able to move the heelcup to the desired position.
Finally, re-screw both screws to complete the adjustment.
To access the available sizes, lift the footbed of the bindings with a flat screwdriver and pull it forward slightly.
To set the desired size, insert the tab under the footbed into the hole corresponding to the chosen size.
#6 Results:
Adjusting the hell cup is not frequent, so using the screwdriver does not compromise the comfort.
Quick and easy adjustment system that doesn’t require a screwdriver.
However, since it is made by moving the footbed of the binding, it is not as strong as the adjustment made directly on the heelcup.
#7 compatible boots
K2 as compatible boots, offers four models for men and one for women.
- K2 men: Boundary (flex 6), Thraxis (flex 9), Maysis (flex 7), Kamas (flex 10)
- K2 women: Kinsley (flex 6)
These boots have a flex ranging from medium to stiff. So the choice is quite wide.
There are seven Burton Step On compatible boots for men and five for women.
While children have the Zipline model.
In addition, Burton has licensed Nitro and DC to produce five other models of compatible boots.
- Burton men: Photon, Ion, Swath, Ruler.
- Burton women: Limelight, Ritual, Felix.
- Burton kids: Zipline.
- Nitro men: Profile TLS, Darkseid, Profile TLS.
- Nitro woman: Cave TLS, Dynasty, Cave TLS.
- Dc men: Judge, Control, Phase.
- Dc women: Lotus, Phase.
#7 Results:
K2 boots, compatible with the Clicker X HB binding, can be used with regular bindings.
This is possible because of the internal hooks on the boot’s sole.
The collaboration with Nitro and DC offers a wide selection of boot models with different features.
However, the technology of Burton Step On bindings does not allow their use on other types of bindings. This is because of the fastening bumps on the boot.
#8 Binding materials
K2 bindings are made of nylon, while the heelcup is made of aluminum.
This makes them durable, but at the same time heavier than Burton step on.
Burton step on bindings are made of a nylon composite.
But there is even a model made of half nylon and half carbon, for minimum weight and maximum performance and durability.
#8 Results:
Made of excellent materials, however, the metal hooks that secure the boot and the aluminum heel cup make it heavier.
Built with excellent materials that make it lightweight.
Plus, the carbon version is great for those looking for the best.
#9 Are they suitable for beginners?
Beginners
To hook up to the Burton Step On and K2 Clicker X HB, you need to be in an upright position, which may be difficult for a beginner snowboarder, especially if the terrain is not completely flat.
In addition, the price for a beginner is excessive. If you are a beginner, I recommend you buy gear with the features that help you learn. When you will be better and will have defined your riding style you can buy new equipment.
Intermediate and expert
Intermediates and experts can make the most of the advantages of step-in bindings.
#9 suitable Styles/Snow conditions
All Mountain
Both K2 clicker and Burton step on bindings offer excellent flex values for all mountain. 6/10 and 5/10, respectively.
In addition, the quick hookup saves time during transfers on the lifts.
So, if you want to get into all-mountain and experience the comfort of a quick hookup, these bindings should definitely be considered.
Freestyle
Many people think it is better to opt for traditional bindings in freestyle, but they are actually very good. The question many people have is, “Is there a risk of sudden release during landing?” No, there is no risk of this happening (if you have hooked them up correctly)!
So if you are looking for freestyle bindings, these are for you.
Freeride
In the K2 Clicker X HB, where the metal hooks for the boots are located, it can be difficult to remove accumulated ice and snow.
If there is snow or ice in the boot or binding hooks, you will not be able to hook.
The solution is simple and is to put more energy into the boot’s hooking movement.
This makes the Clicker X HB less suitable for freeride, where your snowboard is deep in the snow.
Unlike the K2 system, ice formation on the hooking points is very low and removing any accumulation is easier.
This feature makes them suitable for freeriding and, therefore, for powder riding.
