What is all mountain snowboarding? If you’ve heard of all mountain but don’t know exactly what it is and whether it might be right for you, you’ve come to the right place!
In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about all-mountain snowboarding. Let’s start!
What is all mountain snowboarding?
When we talk about all mountain, we don’t mean a specific style made in certain terrain, but rather a style that combines all the others.
Indeed, an all mountain snowboarder wants to do both freestyle and freeride on the same board.
He likes riding in the slopes, off-piste but also tricks at the snowpark. Versatility is basic of all-mountain.
Is all-mountain right for beginners?
Absolutely. All-mountain snowboarding is an excellent choice for beginners.
This style of snowboarding allows you to explore all types of terrain and snow conditions without limiting yourself to one specific style.
With an all-mountain snowboard, you can enjoy both on the slopes, off-piste, and in snow parks.
This versatility allows you to test and improve your skills in different terrains, but most importantly, it helps you figure out which style you prefer.
What does an all-mountain snowboard look like?
A snowboard suitable for all-mountain riding should have the following features:
Snowboard:
Shape
In this style, you have two different choices. You can opt for a versatile board suitable for all styles, such as the directional twin shape, or choose a shape more specific to one style.
I recommend the first choice. However, if you plan to specialize in freeride or freestyle in the future, then choose a more specific shape.

Flex
I recommend a continuous flex, which is equal across the board. This way, it may not be perfect for freeride but will still be good for freestyle.

Bindings:
Flex
The most suitable flex of the bindings is 5 or 6. However, you can also choose 4 or 7 if you want to have more style-specific features, but at the same time versatility.

Boots:
Flex
For all mountain riding, I recommend boots with a flex of 5 or 6 for maximum versatility across styles and terrain. You can also choose flex 4 or 7 to get closer to a specific style.
To better understand which one to choose I recommend you read our guide on snowboard boot flex.
Which stance is perfect for all mountain?
First of all, stance is the way the bindings are positioned and set on the snowboard. It is really important because when you choose the correct stance, riding becomes easier and you progress faster!
That is why I recommend you read our guide on how to properly set up bindings for your style and skill level.
