How much does it cost to wax a snowboard? Find out

If you love snowboarding and want to keep your snowboard in top shape, you might have a question in mind: “How much does it cost to wax a snowboard?”

Waxing a snowboard is an essential maintenance task and plays an important role in ensuring top performance on the slopes.

This article will give you an overview of the average costs of waxing services, do-it-yourself waxing, but also the prices for other maintenance services.

The handmade waxing service with hot wax costs an average of $20 (~20). However, another option might be to wax the snowboard yourself using a waxing kit. To find out which one is best for you, let’s do some simple math…

How much does it cost to wax a snowboard?

Stores that offer snowboard waxing usually offer either hot wax applied by hand or machine-applied hot wax. The latter is similar to rub-on wax and is applied by a machine that rubs it onto the base of the snowboard.

Since the wax that protects the snowboard and gives performance is the hot wax, in this article we will discuss hot wax applied by hand.

Waxing service or Do-it-yourself waxing, which is more convenient?

Waxing service

The waxing service costs an average of $20 (~20). We also suppose that we snowboard about 15 times each season (it is an example).

Now the analysis splits into two:

  • If you have a snowboard with an extruded base and you always want to have excellent performance, you will wax the board about every 7-8 full riding days.
  • If you have a snowboard with a sintered base and you want to always have great performance, you will wax the board about every 3-4 full riding days.

So you will wax the snowboard 2 times per season in the case of extruded base and 4 times in the case of sintered base.

For a total cost for the waxing service of respectively $40 (~€40) or $80 (~€80).

If you do not know the differences between extruded and sintered bases, I suggest you read our guide. I also recommend you read our guide on how often should you wax your snowboard.

DIY waxing

Now let’s see how much it would cost if we wanted to wax the snowboard ourselves using a waxing kit.

On average, a great waxing kit costs $100-130. In addition to the essentials for waxing (wax, brushes, waxing iron, scraper, etc.), it also contains other useful materials and tools for base and edge maintenance.

Moreover, on average, one of these waxing kits contains 150 gr of wax, sufficing for about 11 waxings.

Taking the previous example, if we snowboard 15 times a season, we would spend in waxing services what we spend on a waxing kit in 1 1/2 seasons for a sintered base and a little over two in the case of an extruded base.

However, you must keep in mind that the kit remains yours and that if you run out of wax in the kit you can buy it back for about $20/180gr sufficient for 14 waxings, so for several years (The only expense you will have)!

Not to mention that you will have all the other tools for base and edge maintenance (P-tex, edge tuner, etc.).

Services that cost on average:

  • Hot wax service + side edge sharpening: 35$.
  • P-tex base repair: $15 – $40+ (depending on the size of the damage).

So, as you can see, buying a waxing kit in a few years becomes very convenient. You will spend almost nothing, and you will have your snowboard always in perfect condition!

The only aspect that could be considered negative is that you have to do maintenance on the snowboard yourself, but wouldn’t you be happier using a board maintained in excellent condition by you?

Advice for new snowboarders

If you only snowboard a few times a season, I recommend you buy rub-on wax. It can be applied by rubbing it onto the base and does not require a waxing iron!

This type of wax, since it is only rubbed on the base, is not long-lasting and works only for 1 or 2 days of riding.

It costs about $20/70gr, enough for about 9 waxings.

But what is the trick here?

As you know, hot wax lasts for several days of riding, depending on the type of snowboard base. So, you can preserve the hot wax by applying rub-on wax a few days of riding. This way, you will pay for the waxing service only 1 time per season MAX.

In this case, buying a waxing kit becomes convenient only after several years.

Note: I recommend you do this only if you snowboard a few times a season or if you are not sure about continuing every year.
