How long is the snowboard season?

On average, snowboarding seasons that start in late November or early December end in mid-April – early May
While those that start around June end around October.

That is because in the middle of winter, there is too much snow and the ski lifts can’t handle the viability of the roads/ski resorts.

What affects the snowboard season start?

The aspects that most affect the start of the snowboarding season are altitude and local climate (Connected to the amount of snow and its conservation).

Altitude

Altitude is an important factor. Just think that for every 100m increase in altitude, the air temperature decreases on average by 0.65°C (33.17 °F).

So from 150m above sea level to 2500m, there is a difference of about 16 °C!

You can understand that if a ski resort is at a lower altitude, it is more likely to snow less often, and the snow doesn’t last as long as it does at higher altitudes.

When Does Snowboarding Season Start

Local Climate

Local climate, including temperatures, wind, humidity, and precipitation, plays a key role in determining the start of the snowboard season.

When is the best time to snowboard?

The best time for snowboarding season can be chosen based on three main factors: snow quality, crowds, and price.

Snow quality

The best months of the season in terms of snow quality are the first months, while toward the last month/month and a half on average, the snow quality begins to decline.

Pro tip: A useful tool I recommend you use to check snow conditions at various ski resorts worldwide is On The Snow.

Crowding

In terms of crowding it depends a lot on the location, but on average, the end of the season is much less crowded.

While the last months of winter and early spring are the most crowded. Weekly, it is the weekends that have the highest attendance.

Price

The price varies depending on the period. In the high season, so, in the early months (approximately until after the Christmas vacations), the price is higher. While in low season (generally after January) price is lower.

How to prepare for snowboarding season?

Getting ready for the snowboarding season as best you can is important. Here’s what you should do:

If it’s your first snowboarding season, the only thing I recommend is to get/prepare everything you need for a day in the snow.

If it’s your first time, I don’t recommend buying snowboarding gear (snowboard, bindings, boots, and goggles) because it’s expensive. I recommend renting it, while the only thing you have to get is snow clothes.

If, on the other hand, you have experience with snowboarding, here’s what you should do:

  • Maintain your snowboard (waxing, tuning the edges, etc.). I recommend following our guide to learn how to wax your snowboard correctly.
  • Maintain physical fitness.
  • Check that your gear and clothing are ready for the new season. You don’t want to find yourself the day before without gloves!
  • Create a checklist of new skills you want to learn in the new season.

To help you, we’ve created a snowboarding checklist that will help you prepare well and avoid forgetting important things. Download it now, it’s free!

In conclusion, knowing when snowboarding season starts is important for proper preparation.
