Snowboard equipment

  • Snowboard
  • Snowboard boots
  • Snowboard bindings
  • Helmet: A helmet is essential for safe snowboarding. Although it is not always mandatory for adults, I strongly recommend you wear it. It can save you from serious injuries!
  • Snowboard goggles: snowboard goggles are not necessary. However, I recommend you wear them to protect your eyes from the sun. Personal experience: one very sunny day, I forgot my snowboard goggles, and after an entire day of riding, my eyes were swollen from too much sun.

Find out why it is essential to wear snowboard goggles, explore all the varieties of goggles available, and make an informed choice.

Clothing

  • Snow gloves: don’t underestimate gloves. If they aren’t suitable for cold temperatures, they won’t protect you enough from cold. Icy hands (and feet) are the worst!
  • Ski mask/neck warmer: snow and cold wind on the face are very annoying, and a neck warmer or ski mask helps a lot. Personal experience: My first few times snowboarding, I rented a helmet, and when it was uncomfortable, I also put a neck warmer on my head to make it more comfortable.
  • Thermal jersey: It needs to be worn as the first layer.
  • Thermal pants: They should be worn underneath snow pants. If the day is warm, they are not necessary.
  • Technical fabric sweatshirt/fleece: It should be worn over the thermal jersey. I recommend it with a long zipper as it is more comfortable to take off if you feel too warm.
  • Waterproof snow jacket: It must be worn as the last layer. I recommend it with pockets. Personal experience: The jackets I use all have an inside pocket at chest height. I keep my phone protected there because when we fall it is less likely to hit that part of the body.
  • Waterproof snow pants: I also recommend them with pockets. Personal experience: I usually keep my ski pass in the left pocket of my pants so that when I get to the ski lift turnstiles, I can scan it by getting close.
  • Mountain/snowboard socks: don’t use regular socks that don’t keep you warm and are too thin. I recommend thick, long socks to prevent you from getting sore.
  • Backpack: The backpack is essential for carrying everything you need however, if you are a beginner, it might bother you, especially if it is too loaded, so if you can, leave it in a safe place.

In the backpack

  • Pocket screwdriver set: Keeping a set of pocket screwdrivers can save your day if your gear breaks or you need to fix it. Bring only screwdrivers like the ones in the picture, not exposed ones! Personal experience: one day, I was snowboarding with a friend, and his binding ratchet suddenly broke. Fortunately, I had brought this set of screwdrivers, and we were able to repair his binding without having to walk back to the lifts.
Snowboard tool
  • I.D.
  • Wallet
  • handkerchiefs
  • Water bottle (small)

Optional (recommended)

  • Thin wool gloves: Since it is difficult to handle objects with snowboarding gloves because they are very thick, wool gloves can protect you from cold weather if you are not snowboarding (such as while eating).
  • Food for packed lunch: Useful for saving time. Personal experience: when I go snowboarding, I want to do it as much as possible without wasting too much time. That’s why I try to avoid eating in (often crowded) shelters/facilities.
  • Thermos with hot tea: Perfect for drinking something warm during a break or after a day of riding. Do not carry it in your backpack! It often contains glass or other heat-retaining materials that may break and injure you if you fall while snowboarding!!
  • Sunscreen: the sun, especially in the mountains with snow, is very intense. Using sunscreen will protect you from sunburn. Apply it to any uncovered areas of your body.
  • Painkiller: useful for migraine sufferers.
  • Action camera
  • Chocolate/sweetened candy: if you feel like you’ve been pushing yourself too hard or are dizzy, taking sugar helps.

Extras for beginners (but also for everyone else)

  • Protective gear: knee protectors, back protectors, etc.

What not to bring at all

  • Backpack that is too bulky.
  • Knives, blades, and sharp objects.
  • Fragile objects.
  • Remove piercings, earrings, and chains: they could injure/cut you during a fall.
  • Do not overload the backpack.

Useful tips:

  • Dress in layers so you will always be protected from cold, but if you get warm, you can take off a layer of clothing.
  • If you don’t have portable screwdrivers or need some tools, they are usually provided at the ski lift.
  • Bring any spare clothes you have such as gloves, neck warmers, or socks, as they might be useful.
